He spoke for instance of what businessmen in Hong Kong could
do in promoting Chinese commodities overseas through their commercial
capability, and experience and success in marketing techniques, So
as China's modernisation programe gathers momentum, we may see the
growth of re-exports accelerating.
He also mentioned other possibilities:
arrangements with
Hong Kong industralists and some of their skilled workers for joint production
in China; the construction by Chinese organisations of new industries
in Hong Kong; the development of tourism in China via Hong Kong, and
joint ventures with Hong Kong entrepreneurs in new hotels in China.

Of course the Bank of
Kong could play a part in such developments.
China has its own direct contacts in most of the capitals of the world,
but the very wide representation here of international banks and finance
houses might also prove convenient.
The new situation requires improved communications.
A direct
ferry service to Canton has already started; so have air services; and
once the technical details have been sorted out we may soon see a through
train. I welcome these trends, and the return to normality which they
represent.
