MRS. DOE SAID THE COMMON CAUSES INCLUDED IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD, WRONG CONCEPT ON MARRIAGE, INADEQUATE CARE FOR CHILDREN, DEMANDING GRAND-PARENTS, DISRESPECT FOR THE OLD AND A LACK OF SENSIBLE DIALOGUE BETWEEN GENERATIONS.

+THESE GIVE RISE TO SUCH PROBLEMS AS GENERATION GAP, UNMARRIED MOTHERHOOD, MARITAL DISCORD, JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, DRUG ADDICTION AND OLD PEOPLE FEELING UNWANTED, SHE ADDED.

SHE STATED THAT TO HELP TACKLE THESE PROBLEMS WOULD REQUIRE A SUSTAINED EDUCATIONAL PROCESS WHICH HAD BEEN ONE OF THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE DEPARTMENT AND THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR IN THE FORM OF FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION.

BROADLY SPEAKING, SHE SAID, FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION IS A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT ON HUMAN QUALITIES, FOSTERING STRONGER FAMILY TIES AND PROMOTING SELF-UNDERSTANDING AS A PREVENTIVE MEASURE AGAINST FAMILY DISENGAGEMENT AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS.

MRS. DOE SAID THE FIRST PHASE OF THE CAMPAIGN, WHICH CONCENTRATED ON PROMOTING THE CONCEPT OF FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION AMONG THE COMMUNITY, WAS LAUNCHED EARLIER THIS YEAR.

+THIS INITIAL PHASE HAS MADE A GOOD START, WHICH CAN BE REFLECTED BY THE IMPRESSIVE RATINGS OF THE SPECIAL TV DRAMA SERIES 'UNDER THE SAME ROOF'.

+A PROFESSIONAL AUDIENCE SURVEY SHOWS THAT THE TOTAL AUDIENCESHIP OF THIS FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION SERIES IS ABOUT 15 MILLION. THE SERIES WERE PRODUCED BY RADIO TELEVISION HONG KONG BASED ON CASES PROVIDED BY OUR DEPARTMENT AND VOLUNTARY AGENCIES,+ SHE SAID.

THE NEXT PHASE OF THE CAMPAIGN BEING LAUNCHED IS TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS WELL AS THE PROBLEMS AND THEIR POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS OF INDIVIDUAL TARGET GROUPS WITHIN A FAMILY SETTING PARENTS, HUSBAND AND WIFE, THE YOUTH AND THE ELDERLY.

MRS. DOE SAID SEPARATE PUBLICITY DRIVES DEALING WITH EACH OF THESE PARTICULAR GROUPS WOULD BE CONDUCTED ON A MONTHLY BASIS BY MEANS OF ILLUSTRATIVE CARTOON BOOKLETS, RADIO AND TELEVISION PROGRAMMES, POSTERS, EXHIBITIONS AND SEMINARS.

A WIDE RANGE OF PROMOTIONAL EVENTS GEARED TO THE THEME OF A PARTICULAR TARGET GROUP WILL ALSO BE ORGANISED AT DISTRICT LEVELS IN THE COMING MONTHS, SHE SAID.

THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN PERIOD UNTIL JANUARY NEXT YEAR, SHE SAID, THE OBJECTIVE IS TO HELP INDIVIDUAL FAMILY MEMBERS REALISE THEIR OWN ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES BY INSTILLING RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE IN THEM SO THAT THEY CAN ADOPT THE PROPER ATTITUDE AND ACQUIRE THE SKILLS TO HANDLE TACTFULLY VARIOUS PROBLEMS.

+AS A START, WE AIM AT THE TARGET GROUP OF PARENTS THIS MONTH. PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES WILL BE DIRECTED AT OLD PEOPLE DURING NEXT MONTH- HUSBAND AND WIFE IN NOVEMBER- AND CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN THE MONTHS OF DECEMBER AND JANUARY.
