A TOWN CENTRE WITH MAJOR COMMERCIAL AND COMMUNITY FACILITIES, INCLUDING A MARKET, AN INDOOR GAMES HALL AND A MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK, IS PROPOSED FOR TSING YI ISLAND UNDER A REVISED DRAFT OUTLINE ZONING PLAN PREPARED BY THE TOWN PLANNING BOARD.
OCCUPYING AN AREA CF 14 HECTARES, THE TOWN CENTRE WILL EE SITUATED ON PROPOSED RECLAMATION AŤ TSING YI BAY CLOSE TO OTHER RESIDENTIAL ZONES.
THE DRAFT PLAN COVERS A TOTAL AREA OF ABOUT 950 HECTARES OF WHICH OVER 100 HECTARES ARE BEING OR WILL BE FORMED BY RECLAMATION.
A SPOKESMAN FOR THE TOWN PLANNING BOARD SAID THAT BY 1987 THE POPULATION AT TSING YI WAS EXPECTED TO RISE TO ABOUT 189,000 FROM THE EXISTING 21,000.
OF THE TOTAL, 144,300 WOULD BE ACCOMMODATED IN PUBLIC HOUSING ESTATES AND 44,700 IN PRIVATE HOUSING ON THE ISLAND WHICH FORMS PART OF TSUEN WAN NEW TOWN.
THE SPOKESMAN ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE DRAFT PLAN AIMS AT PROVIDING LAND FOR COMMUNITY FACILITIES, SUCH AS OPEN SPACES, SCHOOLS AND OTHER GOVERNMENT, INSTITUTION AND COMMUNITY USES IN SUPPORT OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENT.
+ IT ALSO AIMS AT ACHIEVING A PROPER BALANCE BETWEEN INDUSTRIAL AND RESIDENTIAL AREAS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME PROVIDING ADEQUATE ACCESS AND LINKS TO OTHER PARTS OF THE NEW TOWN.+
