PROVISION OF PARKING FACILITIES
IN RESIDENTIAL DUILDINGS

THE PROVISION OF PARKING FACILITIES IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IS ONLY COMPULSORY WHERE THERE ARE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS IN LEASE CONDITIONS, THE HON. DAVID MCDONALD, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS, SAID TODAY.
HE WAS REPLYING TO A QUESTION BY THE HON. ROGER LOBO AT THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEETING.
+THE RATIO OF CAR PARKING SPACE TO ACCOMMODATION FOR DENSITY ZONE 2, IN WHICH THE MAJORITY OF THE MID-LEVELS LIES, HAS VARIED OVER THE YEARS,+ MR. MCDONALD SAID.
IN 1965 WHEN DENSITY ZONING WAS INTRODUCED THE RATIO WAS ONE CAR PARKING SPACE PER FLAT, THIS, WAS INCREASED TO 1-1/4 SPACES PER FLAT IN 1971 AND TO 1-1/2 SPACES PER FLAT IN 1972, HE SAID.
IN 1975, THE RATIO WAS AMENDED TO ONE TO 1-1/2 SPACES PER FLAT OR PER 1,200 SQUARE FEET OF GROSS FLOOR AREA WHICHEVER PROVIDED THE LESSER RATION.
MR. MCDONALD SAID: THE PARKING REQUIREMENT THEREFORE DEPENDS ON THE DATE OF THE LEASE. HOWEVER, WHERE THE REQUIREMENT IS IN EXCESS OF THE CURRENT RATIO A MODIFICATION COULD BE PERMITTED FOR REDUCTION TO THAT RATIO.+
IN REPLY TO ANOTHER QUESTION BY MR. LOBO, MR. MCDONALD SAID THAT SEVEN APPLICATIONS FOR NEW BUILDINGS HAD BEEN RECEIVED BY THE BUILDINGS ORDINANCE OFFICE BETWEEN MAY 1 WHEN BUILDING RESTRICTIONS IN THE MID-LEVELS AREA WERE LIFTED AND 9 A.M. YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).
