A UNIQUE FEATURE OF THE PROJECT WILL BE A PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE INSIDE THE TUNNEL AT THE POINT WHERE IT PASSES OVER ANOTHER TUNNEL CARRYING WATER FROM THE HIGH ISLAND RESERVOIR.

ONLY ONE METRE WILL SEPARATE THE TWO TUNNELS AT THIS
THE BRIDGE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE LOADS AND VIBRATION FROM RAIL TRAFFIC BEING TRANSMITTED TO THE WATER TUNNEL.
MR. STEAD ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE TRACK WITHIN THE TUNNEL WILL BE SET IN CONCRETE, ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR THE BALLAST AND SLEEPERS USED IN CONVENTIONAL TRACK.
+AS WELL AS OCCUPYING LESS SPACE AND HENCE REDUCING THE SIZE OF THE TUNNEL, THIS FORM OF TRACK IS ALSO EXPECTED TO SHOW SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS IN MAINTENANCE COSTS,+ HE SAID.
SUITABLY QUALIFIED FIRMS WILL SHORTLY BE ASKED TO APPLY FOR INVITATIONS TO TENDER FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THIS CONCRETE TRACK.
THE TUNNEL HAS BEEN DESIGNED BY THE RAILWAY DIVISION OF THE P.W.D. WHO WILL ALSO SUPERVISE ITS CONSTRUCTION ON BEHALF OF THE KOWLOON CANTON RAILWAY.
