"A competent radio officer apart from knowing the routine of
sending or receiving radio signals, should also be able to handle
efficiently the radio traffic concerning safety of life at see and be able
to maintain the equippent in good working order and to carry out repairs
within a short time under stress. Radio officers are gradually becoming
radio and electronic officers on ships," he said.
For this reason, he skid, the students were required in the
examination to locate faults in six pieces of radio equipment within
20 minutes each.
"In training radio officers to the necessary high standard, a
sophisticated, well designed study programme, which includes new technology,
is required," he said.
He pointed out that the Hong Kong Polytechnic is the only institute
in Hong Kong providing a radio officer's course approved by the Postmaster
General. It is also one of only three overseas institutes providing a radar
waintenance course approved by the Department of Trade in the United Kingdom.
The other two are in Ireland and New Zealand.
"All these subjects are covered in parts I and II of the examination
which is identical to that in Britain," he added.
The Meritime Radiocommunication General Certificate issued by the
Post Office is recognised in the Commonwealth and in accordance with the
International Telecommunication Union requirements. Many Hong Kong radio
officers are working on foreign ships.
