Hong Kong towards the end of the year to take up a senior post within

the BBC as Controller, orthern Ireland,
Mr. Hawthorne first joined the Hong Kong Government in hay 1970
on secondment from the 3BC as Controller (Television), and became Director
of Broadcasting in November 1972.
A Government spokesman said today iir. Hawthorne had been a prize
force in the development of the Government's radio and television services
and would be greatly missed.
"he was particularly effective in building up the government's
television service from scratch, and its success is clearly evident in
the popularity of such series as 'Viewpoint and angles' and 'Below the
Lion Rock' which has won many awards and is firmly established as one of
Hong Kong's most popular programmes, "the spokesman said.
r. Hawthorne played a major role in merging Educational Television
(ZIV) with Radio Television Hong Kong to enable the bust use to be unde of
the creative talent and production resources of the two units.
"He was also prominent in the Asien-Facific Brode sting Union in
its negotiations over the shred use of international broadcast facilities,"
the spokesman added.
