TAI YUEN SQUATTER AREA FIRE Interview Of Victims Continues

Housing Department staff today (Monday) continued their efforts

to help victims of Saturday's Tai Yuen squatter area fire by interviewing

them on their housing needs.

At a site identification held yesterday (Sunday), 60 families

totalling 239 people were confirmed to be genuine fire victims.

"Families whose structures were covered by the 1964 squatter

survey will be accommodated in public housing estates whilst those covered

by the 1976. survey will be rehoused in licensed areas," a spokesman for the

Housing Department said.

The fire also gutted nine cottages in the Chuk Yuen cottage area,

making homeless 12 families totalling 89 people. They will be rehoused in

public housing estates.

A number of workshops and pigsties were also destroyed in the fire.

"Workshop operators can either opt for factory units provided

their trades are acceptable, or for ex-gratia allowance at the rate of $20

per square foot up to a maximum of $100,000," said the spokesman.

"The ex-gratia allowance for pigs ty operators is $10 per square

foot up to a maximum of $40,000,"
