TOPLEY OPENS NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL
A new $6 million private non-profit-making school in Hammer Hill
-
Road, Kowloon - Pooi Tun Secondary School was opened by the Director of
Education, Mr. Kenneth Topley, this afternoon.
The Government's contribution took the form of an interest-free
loan of $4,4 million and a free grant of site to the sponsoring body, the
Christian Missions in Many Lands.
The 24-classroom school came into operation in 1974 when part of
the premises was completed and a temporary occupation permit was issued.
The school has an ultra-modern assembly hall, a good number of
special rooms and playgrounds. The school comes under the current scheme
of bought places and a per caput grant.
"This is indeed yet another example of what can be done to promote
education in Hong Kong with full oc-operation between a good sponsoring body
and the Government," said Mr. Topley in his speech at the opening ceremony.
He noted that the sponsoring body had been engaged in education
work in Hong Kong for nearly 20 years.
The Christian Missions in Many Lands run three kindergartens and
five primary schools with a total enrolment of over 6,000. With the
enrolment of Pooi Tun taken into account, the Missions are catering to the
needs of well over 7,000, which was an impressive figure, the Director said.
Mr. Topley took the opportunity to stress the importance of
determining the aims of education in the context of modern life and to
outline briefly what he considered to be broad aims of education.
