DUKE PROJENIS EDINBURGH'S GOLD WARDS TO 34 YOUNG PEOPLE
Prince Philip carly this evening presented the gel” award of
the Duke of Edinburgh's ward Schone to 34 young men and women at a
ceremony in Government Heuse.

The award winners were aged between 18 and 25. There were
actually 35 winners, but no is abroad. Of the 34, cne award was received
by the father of Mr. Lea Shea, who could not be present.
The Duke was accompanied by the Governor. Alse attending was
Hr. Peter P.K. Ng, an appointed member of the Urban Council and chairman
of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Schone Award Committee.
Mr. Ng said it had originally been thought that Prince Philip
would only be presenting 27 awards at the ceremony this evening.
"But the total grow as nure and nire candidates exerted themselves
to complete their assignments on time to receive the gold award from the
hands of His Royal Highness," he commented.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme began operating in Hong
Keng in 1961. The scheme for boys was introduced in March 1961, and for
Cirls in august 1963. Five years later, the two were merged to forti a
Jint schemo,
Hong Kong will be the host country for the third Commonwealth
Gold Award Expedition later this year. Arrangements for the Expedition
are being organised by a committee under the chairmanship of Sir Kenneth
Ping-fan Fung.
