SUGGESTED OIL REFINERY
Petrochemicals Complex On Irımma Island
The Consultants' report on the suggested oil refinery and
petrochemicals plant on Larsa Toland concludes that they can be designed
and operated to be completely acceptable environmentally, provided there
are both strong protective legislation and Government control and there
is proper management.
Anouncing public release of the report by the London based
consulting chenical engineers, Cremer and Warner, a Government spokesman
emphasised that no decision had been made on whether to go ahead with
the proposal.
The residents of Lamra Island have been informed of the contents
of the report and copies have been sent to the applicant companies, the
Shell Corrany of Hong Kong and Textile Alliance Ltd. The latter company
submitted a joint suggestion for a refinery-petrochemicals plant with the
TOA Oil Comny of Japan (TAL/TOA).
"The amlicant companies," the spokesman said, "have now to
examine the report and decide if they wish to submit firm proposals to the
Governnout."
"If either of them do so," he said, "the advantages and dis-
advantages will be presented to the public in a Green Paper before a
final decision is made by the Government.
"The consultants have made it clear," the spokesman continued,
"that they do not consider there is room to accommodate more than one
oil refinery and one petrochemicals plant on North Lamma."
