MR. SALES ELECTED URBCO CHAIRMAN

Mr. Cheong-Leen To Be Vice-Chairman

At a meeting of the unofficial Members of the Urban Council held

this morning, it was agreed that Mr. A. de O. Sales should be elected

as Chairman to the new Urban Council which will be formed on 1st April,

It was also agreed to elect Mr. Hilton Cheong-Leen as Vice-Chairman.

The agreement was reached by a ballot when Mr. Sales, Mr. B.A.

Bernacchi and Mr. Cheong-Leen were nominated for Chairman.

Mr. Sales gained a clear majority out of the twenty-four Members

Mr. Bernacchi and Mr. Cheong-Leen were then nominated for Vice-

Chairman and Mr. Cheong-Leen was voted in with a clear majority.

Mr. Sales was first appointed to the Urban Council on 1st April, 1957.

and is now the Senior Appointed Member.

Since his first appointment, Mr. Sales has served on most of the

Council's select committees, being most active in the fields of public

housing, cultural services, recreation and public entertainmen....

He was for many years the Chairman of the Cultural Affairs Select

Committee and is still the Chairman of the Recreation and Amenities Select

Committee which he will give up on taking the chair of the Council..
