INCREASE IN RICE IMPORT QUOTA
The Commerce and Industry Department has announced an increase in the
rice import quota for the first three months of this year.
The increase amounts to 6,600 metric tons or 71⁄21⁄2 per cent of the basic
quarterly quota.
Commenting on the increase, a spokesman for the Department said the
cooler weather had produced an increased demand for rice.
"The quota increase authorised will also serve to stem rising prices
and has taken into account rice supplies presently available on overseas markets,
he said.
The spokesman added that the current supply position was good and
importers should have no difficulty in importing the additional amount.
Nevertheless, the Department would continue to keep a careful watch
over developments.
