The Hon. H.J.C. Browne stressed the urgency for a change and said the

present retiring age of 55 "is out of step with the practice in the private

secotr."

In moving for the adjournment of the debate, the Colonial Secretary,

Sir Hugh Norman-Walker, said the issue had been the subject of consultation

between the Government and the Staff Side of the Senior Civil Service Council

for a considerable time.

He said "a joint and unanimous proposal" had only last week been

received from the three staff associations and this would be placed before

the Governor-in-Council very shortly.
