SEVERANCE PAY DISPUTE IN KNITTING FACTORY

Settled With Help Of Labour Department

With the help of the Labour Department, an amicable settlement

has been reached in the dispute between the knitters and the management of

Regina Knitting and Dyeing Mills Limited over severance pay.

Officers of the Labour Relations Service intervened soon after

the dispute broke out on December 18, 1972.

A visit to the factory on that evening drew both parties to the

conference table.

Three lengthy conciliation meetings lasting a total of 16 hours

were subsequently held.

As a result of an agreement signed on December 21, about 50 workers

received severance pay of $400 each. The total amount involved is about

$20,000.

Payment was made at the San Po Kong Branch Office of the Labour

Department at noon on Saturday, December 23.

The hand knitting section of the factory has been declared redundant

with the introduction of semi-automated work processes.

The other sections of the factory with some 150 workers are carrying

on with their normal production.
