As the humidity drops further, the incidence of fire increases
sharply and a 58 per cent reading is quite often accompanied by about
1,200 fires.
The spokesman said: "Every year, thousands of serious fires
break out in Hong Kong. Every year, fires kill
in the 1971-72 year,
250 people died. And every year, tens of millions of dollars worth
of property are destroyed by fire."
"Virtually all of this could be easily avoided. All fires are
caused by carelessness or neglect. Simple precautions can prevent any
outbreak of fire in your home or where you work," he added.
The spokesman urged the public to dial 999 and ask for the
Fire Services whenever they see a fire or suspect there is a fire,
Should they want free advice on fire protection for their
property, or are worried about dangers at their home or work, he said, they
should contact the Fire Prevention Bureau Enquiries Centre or get in
touch with any fire station. The service is available at any hour of
the day or night, every day of the year.
