VAUGHAN WILLIAMS CENTENARY CONCERT
The Urban Council will present a concert on Thursday (September 7)
to mark the centenary of the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958),
when a number of his works in recorded music will be played.
Vaughan Williams was born at Down Ampney, Gloucestershire.
He studied
at the Royal College of Music in 1890, and two years later went to Cambridge
University.
He began his extensive study and collection of English folk songs at
around 1901, and turned back to the polyphonic music of the English Tudors.
He pointed out that music in England was not revealed in the numerous
musical events and festivals, but rather it was latent in the people, as expressed
in the fine folk-melodies that existed.
Vaughan Williams' principal works include nine symphonies, the first
published in 1910 and the last in 1958; a number of orchestral suites;
music: and a book called "National Music".
