LEGISLATION ON COMMUNITY SERVICE ORDERS

The Attorney General, the Hon. D.T.E. Roberts, said today that it

would be wise to study how legislation empowering the Courts in England to

make Community Service Orders worked before deciding whether it was desirable

to make similar provision in Hong Kong.

The Attorney General was replying in the Legislative Council to

the Hon. Wilson Wang, who asked: "Will Government introduce legislation to

enable the Courts of the Colony to make Community Service Orders whenever such

an order is considered to be a penalty appropriate to an offence or the offender?"

Roberts said the English bill was introduced into Parliament last

MI.

year, but he had not been able to find out if it had been enacted.
