On the question of having "our own man" in Tokyo, Mr. Lee said

that the Trade Development Council had, of course, been represented in Tokyo since November 1970, when an office had been opened in recognition of the growing significance of Japan as an export market.

"As far as Government representation is concerned, we have also considered this but feel that, for the present, the volume of commercial policy work is not sufficient to justify a full time presence, and we arė well looked after by Her Majesty's Ambassador and his staff," he said.

He pointed out that Tokyo was only three hours away and, in the

past year, senior staff of his department had made several visits there

to deal with specific points in conjunction with the British Embassy.

"It is our intention to maintain and strengthen these contacts,"

he stressed.
