HONG KONG'S CONTRIBUTION TO DEFENCE
Future Level Under Consideration

Sir John Cowperthwaite, Financial Secretary, told the Legislative
Council today the present agreement on the Defence Contribution expired on
March 31 this year, and its futuro level was "under consideration at present,'
He explained that a decision had been delayed because "there was
no basis for consideration of the appropriate level until Her Majesty's
Government had reached decisions on Far Eastern defence dispositions."
In the meantime, the estimates had been prepared on the basis of
the present agreement.
