It is the result of some conversation which we had on interesting topics to which it refers.         "content_text": "## \nAt present one of the officers leaves Mongthong for Thangkat about 24 hours after the arrival of the English mail Packet, and arrives at Shanghai about ... days, and on the return trip the duty is comparatively trifling, it being only necessary to sort the small local mail for Hongtong. \n\nNo sort the mails in this office, I propose to accomplish in a very short time with the help Ready for immediate delivery; he remains at Shanghai on average about 2 days, returning to Wongthing with the first English Mail, with the Hongtong correspondence prepared for immediate delivery here. On the trip to Shanghae the sorting duty is constant and laborious whilst in Shanghai the Marine Officer's time is almost lost to the Department.\n\n4. By the arrangement proposed, I shall obtain the benefit of the two Marine Officers in question for constant duty here, and be able to sort in HongHong not only the mails for Shanghai arriving by the British Contract Packets, but those mails for Shanghai which reach Nongthing by the French Packets also. Since then another startling event in connection with the Emigration has occurred, viz: destruction by fire at but short distance from Wongting of a vessel called the \"Dan Juan\", which had 650 Emigrants embarked at Macao and bound for Peru.\n\nThe vessel appears to have sailed in the evening of the 4th of May, and to have been arrested on her voyage about mid-day on the 6th when fire issuing, as was at first observed by the Immigrants, from the Captain's Cabin and passing from thence downwards to the Main deck, and as the crew maintain, from the main-deck to the Cabin, when it passed to the rigging and through the ship.\n\nIt has not been possible to ascertain with any degree of certainty either where or through whom the fire originated, the crew generally maintaining that it was caused intentionally by some of the Coolies at the after part of the main-deck who resisted every attempt to get it under and murdered two men who interposed, whilst the Immigrants allege that the fire was purely accidental.",

It is quite clear that her fittings were made in Wongting, and there is good reason for concluding that at any rate part of the fittings were actually fixed before the vessel left those waters.\n\nNevertheless, it is equally clear that the Officers of the Harbor Department were on the alert with a view to preventing, as far as their limited powers permitted, the fixing of objectionable gratings. The first proceeded in the direction of Cheung Chaw in order to pay the regular duty, and she had already the account sales, invoice, and manifest. The weather, however, was so bad that she was driven to Shue Wan in Wongting instead of getting to Cheung Chaw. Where she was stopped and seized by a Junk under a charge of smuggling, and the Junk and manifest were sent up to Canton with her cargo.\n\nPetitioner complained that Yung The Wan is within British Territory and that she had not yet passed Cheung Chau, which is outside of Yung Shue Was... it was rather premature that she was charged with smuggling.\n\nThis Petition was forwarded to Her Majesty's Consul in No. 289 of 19th April 1875, with a hope expressed that the sale of Junk and cargo might be stayed pending enquiries.
