Hayshar (and to which Mr. St. Helens called Your Lordship's attention) to the effect that a sum of $15,000 had been given to SW Pitman on the ground that he (being a very good friend of mine) had obtained the Opium tariff for the Opium Farmers in January 1879. Your Lordship appears to think that this ought not to have been passed over in silence by me as it has been severely commented upon in the Hongkong newspapers.\n\n2. Meantime, Your Lordship however knows, as I do, the source and origin of the statement in question and the character of the newspapers that commented upon it, I believe you would have agreed with me in thinking it not worthy of notice.\n\n3. latter, in one regards the publication of Governor Sir John Bowring's despatcher that was printed for the information of Parliament (JM54 of 29th March 1859) he speaks of \"the infamous public press of Hongkong\"; and in despatches from Sir Hercules Robinson...",
