        "content_text": "590\n\nFrom the Manager, China & Japan Telephone Co.Ltd.\n\nTo the Honourable the Acting Director of Public Works.\n\nSir,\n\nHongkong, 9th March, 1901.\n\nElectric Tramways.\n\nI have the honour to submit the following remarks in continuation of what I said at the Meeting this morning.\n\nThe Single Trolley system, according to the opinion of the ablest scientific men in England, does not, even when worked strictly in accordance with the Board of Trade Regulations, prevent disturbances in telephone wires, and the eating away of pipes laid in the ground.\n\nThe following opinion on this subject was expressed by Prof. Perry, D.Sc., F.R.S. in his Presidential Address to the Institute of Electrical Engineers in London a few months ago.\n\n\"As an electrical engineer I ought surely to regret the use of uninsulated returns (for tramways), even if we leave the Kew Observatory out of the question. Suppose we do not now insulate our returns, Electricity will certainly return by gas and water pipes and the amount of harm done to these pipes is merely a question of time. Because of the ignorance of Legislators and Gas and Water Companies, nothing is said just now, but will nothing be said at the end of ten years or twenty years when pipes are found to be eaten away everywhere? July 22, 1926.)\n\nANOTHER SHOOTING.\n\nJuly 16.\n\nAn inquiry into the death of a Chinese from a bullet wound inflicted by a detective on the night of June 26 commenced before Mr. R. E. Lindsell and a jury at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon.\n\nThe deceased was alleged to be one of four suspicious characters who ran away from the detective when he accosted them.\n\nDr. Craig in his medical evidence said that he found three bullet wounds on the body, one of which pierced the liver and intestines.\n\nThe first and third shots were apparently fired from behind and the other was fired from the front.\n\nDeath was due to shock and haemorrhage caused by the wounds.\n\nThe Chinese mortuary attendant gave evidence of picking up a spent bullet which fell out of the dead man's clothing.\n\nHe also deposed to finding a canvas knife sheath inside the socks.\n\nFurther evidence was to the effect that the detective gave chase and shots were fired by the detective at the runaway.\n\nThe deceased dropped dead near the Central Market.\n\nWhen the dead body was taken to the Police Station, a dagger was found among the man's clothing.\n\nAddressing the jury, Mr. Lindsell related the circumstances of the affair and said it would be for them to decide whether the shooting was justifiable or not.\n\nThe inquiry was adjourned until to-day for the evidence of the detective.\n\nOVERLAND PASSENGER LIST.\n\nARRIVALS.\n\nList of passengers arrived per \"President Grant\" from Manila, on July 14:\n\nMr. S. To-day, it occupies an increasingly important position in the eyes of the world mainly by virtue of the fact that time has tested and proved the efficacy of its teaching.\n\nYesterday afternoon's Twentieth Congregation and conferment of degrees presented an unusually animated scene. The lawn adjoining the tennis courts of the University was thronged by a representative gathering of leading members of the European and Chinese communities who fraternised to the accompaniment of music played by the band of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and the rattle of teacups.\n\nThe Chancellor (His Excellency the Governor, Sir Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.) and the Vice-Chancellor of the University (Mr. W. W. Hornell, C.I.E.), gave prominence to many points of interest in addresses which were, as usual, of very great interest to all educationalists. Of special importance was the Governor's plea for the Chinese and English peoples to make greater efforts to study and understand each other's physical, mental, and spiritual aspirations in order that perfect accord and unanimity in the ideals and aims of both nations could result.\n\nAN IMPOSING PROCESSION.\n\nTo the impressive strains of Mancinelli's march, \"Cleopatra,\" a procession of some length filed into the Great Hall at 5 p.m. The congregation remained standing until His Excellency the Governor, in the black and gold robes of the Chancellor, declared the Congregation opened for the conferring of degrees.\n\nTHE PROCESSION.\n\nThe procession presented an imposing spectacle and was formed as follows:-\n\nHis Excellency the Chancellor, The Mace Bearer,\n\nThe Vice-Chancellor and The Hon.
