A very amusing dramatical piece entitled \"The Irish Lion\" was well performed by the Scholars, after which a large number of prizes were distributed, the Revd. Mr. Beure presenting them. Her Majesty has been pleased to recognize the appointment of Mr. Tanish Kim Ching as Consul for Siam at Singapore.\n\nthe 12th, arrived at New Harbour at noon yesterday.\n\nThe meeting held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon, was very numerously attended; the following gentlemen being among those present.\n\nT. Wagner\n\nThe meeting was of a preliminary nature, and a committee composed of the following gentlemen was appointed for the purposes mentioned in the resolution.\n\nWednesday, 16th December. The Annual Examination of the Pupils of St. Joseph's Academy took place yesterday evening and terminated at 11 o'clock at night.\n\nThe Examination of the pupils under the charge of the Lady Superioress and Sisters of Charity, was held yesterday at the Convent and did credit to the untiring exertions of those under whose management this establishment is so ably conducted.\n\nThe Annual Examination of the Girls Department of the Singapore Institution Schools under Mrs. Audel's superintendence took place yesterday.\n\nPenang, from Mr. G. W. Earl, on the 8th Instant.\n\nThe following Gentlemen will form the Board of Municipal Commissioners, under Section XI. of Act XVII of 1863, at Penang, for the year 1864:\n\nThe Resident Councillor, President ex-Officio.\n\nCaptain William Somerville Mitchell, appointed by the Governor to hold Office for 1 year.\n\nMr. Lawrence Nairne, appointed by election to hold Office for 3 years.\n\nMr. Steward Herriot, appointed by election to Office for 2 years.\n\nMr. George Macfarlane Sandilands, appointed by election to hold Office for 1 year.\n\nThe subjects of examination embraced Grammar, Geography, Arithmetic, Geometry; a few sentences in French were translated and some speeches made. The pupils seemed to have attained considerable proficiency—the younger boys generally displaying more intelligence than their elders. Altogether this examination reflects great credit on the teachers, the Christian Brothers.\n\nThe exhibition, as advertised, takes place to-morrow evening at 6 o'clock.\n\nThe number of pupils in attendance, 55, of whom 33 were boarders, was more than double that at any previous examination, and testifies to the able manner in which the School has been conducted during the past year, and to its present flourishing condition.\n\nAfter the Examination a number of premiums were distributed.\n\nThe progress exhibited by the girls in their studies and their excellent department, together with their very neat appearance, attracted considerable attention and justified the commendations of the Examiners.\n\nUpon the satisfactory management of Mrs. Anderson. Many of the pupils are orphans and it is to be hoped that this great charity will be properly supported by the Government.\n\nThat the following Gentlemen form a Committee for the purpose of collecting information regarding the finances, resources, and commerce of the Straits Settlements, and that if expedient they put themselves in communication with Commissioners appointed by Her Majesty's Government to report upon the proposed Transfer.\n\nJoaquin D'Almeida, Esq.\n\nR. Steamer Henriette, Captain Schul from Delhi with dates to the 8th instant, arrived in the harbour yesterday.\n\nThe Swedish bark Charlotte, Captain Mellender, from Hongkong 24th Nov., passed through the Harbour yesterday bound to Bombay and requested to be reported.\n\n\"I have this out nearly 47 and think it is to be studied is to keep the head well protected from the sun. I estimate it as good as perhaps better than that of Europe, particularly for an old man, if care is taken to keep the head protected from the sun, and ale hat is not made use of too freely.\"\n\nThe same paper says:-\n\n\"A schooner from Acheen reports that the port was lately visited by a Dutch steamer, the commander of which endeavoured, without success, to prevail on the Rajah to give him a friendly letter addressed to his Government.\"\n\nThursday, 17th December. The British Steamer Amoy, Captain Salwery, from Shanghai, anchored in the roads last night. Company's steamer Orissa, Captain Parish, from Hongkong with dates to the 15th instant, arrived in the roads last night.\n\nThe Messageries Imperiales steamer Tigre, Captain Deslondes, with the Marseilles mail of the 19th and the London mail of the 17th arrived at New Harbour this morning.\n\nThe Dutch steamer Koningen der Nederlanden, Captain Lewis, from Batavia with dates to the 17th instant anchored in the roads last night.\n\nCAPTAIN LEWIS of the Koningen, reports, that on the 17th December at 4 while Steaming N. N. W. South Watches bearing N. distance about 8 miles, they saw a steamer to the Southwards, to pass to the E. of South Watchers.\n\nHis Honor the Governor has been pleased to make the following appointments as a temporary measure, with effect from the 30th ult:\n\nMr. E. J. Westerhout, to officiate as Police Magistrate, Commissioner of the Court of Requests, and Assistant Resident Councillor, Malacca.\n\nThe examination of the Institution and Schools took place yesterday, commencing at 11 a.m. and terminating at 3 o'clock.\n\nThe British barque Couranto bound to this port and now considerably overdue, was spoken by the Hamburg barque Emily on the 21st of last month in Banka Straits.\n\nThe appearance of the Verandahs throughout the principal thoroughfares at the present time, does not seem to indicate a desire on the part of the tenants and proprietors of the houses to comply with the Municipal Notification issued three months ago.\n\nTuesday, 15th December.\n\nMr. E.         "content_text": "## 328\n\n2 \n\n3 \n\nmore and more understood and rightly interpreted by the boat and seafaring people as the time went on, as is always the case, the Committee believe, when a system of signalling is introduced. *Senta, *Shanghai, *Shantung, *Sherard Osborne, *Siam, *Singan, *Sishan, *Suit, *Socotra, *Spinaway, *Store Nordiske, *Strathallan, *Suising, *Sumatra (bk.), *Sunda, *Sungkiang, *Sullberg, likewise convey to masters of ships intimations of the state of the weather at a distance on the voyage Sydney, Szechuet, *Tacoma, *Taicheong, *Taichiow, *Tailee, *Taisang, *Taiwan, *Taiyick, *Taksang, *Tancarville, *Tantalus, *Terrier, *Tetartos, *Thales, *Thames, *Thekla, *Tientsin, *Tokio, *Tordenskjold, *Toyo Maru, *Trieste, *Tritos, *Triumph, *Trocas, *Tsinan, *Vega (bk.), *Verona, *Victoria, *Victoria (N.P.S.S.Co.), *Vindobona, *Wakasa Maru, *Woosung, *Wosang, *Wuotan, *Yamashiro Maru, *Yamaguchi Maru, *Yarra, *Yashima (H.J.M.S.), *Yutensang, *Zafiro.\n\n6. The China Coast Meteorological Register was printed daily at the Observatory, and information regarding storms was telegraphed to and exhibited on notice-boards in Hongkong and ports in China and neighbouring countries as often and as fully as such information could be justified by the weather telegrams received. This happened on 69 days in 1897.\n\n7. Telegraphic connection with Victoria was interrupted on the 16th April, 1897, from 10 a.m. to noon; from the 8th May at 8.12 a.m. to 9th May at 8.12 a.m.; on the 18th May from 11.45 a.m. to 2.26 p.m.; from the 21st at 5.50 p.m. to 23rd May at 6.48 a.m.; on the 23rd May from 10.15 a.m. to 1.34 p.m.; on the 24th May from 1.10 a.m. to 9.8 a.m.; on the 27th May from 4.13 p.m. to 5 p.m.; from the 30th May at 11.55 p.m. to 31st May at 1.34 a.m.; on the 5th June from 4 p.m. to 6.45 p.m.; on the 17th June, from 1.10 a.m. to 6.26 a.m. and from 7.26 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.; on the 15th July from 2.58 p.m. to 7.54 p.m.; on the 28th August from 9.50 a.m. to 10.43 a.m.; on the 5th November from 11.25 a.m. to 0.20 p.m. Interruptions occurred therefore on 16 days, and, of course, during thunderstorms. Telephone connection with the Peak was interrupted on the 15th January from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.; from the 8th April at 8 a.m. to 10th April at 6 a.m.; from the 1st August at 11 a.m. to 2nd August at 10 a.m.; from the 17th September at 5 p.m. to 18th September at 6 a.m.; from the 6th October at 6 a.m. to 20th October at 1 p.m.; from the 13th November at 6 a.m. to 15th November at 6 a.m., i.e., on 26 days as well as during thunderstorms.\n\n8. During 1897, in addition to meteorological registers kept at 40 stations on shore, 2,635 ship logs have been copied on board or forwarded by the captains. The total number of vessels, whose log books have been made use of, was 283. The total number of days' observations (counting separately those made on board different ships on the same day) was 20,899.\n\n## Table I.
