        "content_text": "## 1943\n\n**Honourable Captain Superintendent of Police.**\n\nI attach reports concerning several new recruits.\n\n(1) Dorling. This man's vision is technically 6/60, which means that for practical purposes he is blind. I attach Dr. Harston's report. It is true that with glasses his vision can be made good, but I fear that you would not approve it. If you do not approve glasses, the man must be sent home. It would be sheer madness to keep him as an active member of the Police Force. This is the present condition; it will be the future condition, but I cannot state with certainty that it was so in the past.\n\n(2) Darkin. The vision of the right eye is excellent; that of the left is approximately 50% of normal vision. I think, as the man is here and seems a useful officer, that he might be kept on. I think Dr. Esler was justified in raising an objection.\n\n(3) Rowe. This man is useless as an officer. I have had to detain him in the Asylum, and his nervous system is so unsuitable that I would not pass him as fit for the least responsibility. I do not think that I would, or would have come to this conclusion from a single examination.\n\n(4) McGuire. This man is suffering from such a degree of nerve weakness that I fear his services as a police officer could not be relied upon. He had to have his bladder emptied by catheter for several days - a by no means pleasant process - and I could find no cause beyond nerve disorder. He is now back in hospital suffering from typically nervous lesions.\n\n(5) Neary. This man is addicted to alcohol at times and seems to be of a low mentality. I think that your views will be of great value, and if they agree with mine, as I believe they do, it seems rather better to accept a certain loss...",
