I purchased Corps, at the suggestions of Major d. C. Rowland R. A. Ordnance and Military Store Keeper at Hong Kong, and served under that Gentleman as Storeman and afterwards as Foreman of Magazines. In consequence of a reduction of the establishment being ordered by the Home authorities, I was reverted to Storeman and finally left the department.\n\nThe other Officers in connection with the department whilst I served in it, were Messrs W. Silva (Paymaster), George Pirkis and Brauscome (Ordnance Clerks), William Hing (Issuer of Stores) and Messrs Dalgarno, Carter, Smith, and ... Martin (Shrema -Kary Clerks).\n\nAfter leaving the Ordnance and Military Store department, I was engaged as Government Emigration Clerk under D. G. Austin H.M.'s Special Agent for the promoting of Chinese Emigration to the West Indies (afterwards Colonial Secretary at Hong Kong). The Staff of European Clerks, Interpreters, and Agents were Mr. Theophilus Sampson of the Leeward Agency, and myself, Mr. Rubery, and Mr. Maxwell at Hong Kong, also Captain Godeffroy who had charge of the vessel purchased by Mr. J. Cauldfield and Ruxton\n\nCircular issued by Shanghai Branch of the China Association.\n\nVOLUNTEERS FOR SERVICE IN HIS MAJESTY'S ARMY.\n\nChina Association, Shanghai Branch,\n\n9th October, 1914.\n\nDEAR SIR,\n\nHis Majesty's Minister at Peking appeals to the British Communities at the Treaty Ports to aid men who wish to volunteer their services to their country during the period of the war. This Branch of the Association has interested itself in this movement for some time past and made a definite offer of 100 men to the War Office. This offer has been accepted, and it must be gratifying to all Britons to learn that there are many more men willing to come forward.\n\nIt is known that subscriptions are being raised for various Patriotic Funds in Shanghai, but the Committee of the China Association appeals to its Members to subscribe towards the passages home of the men who have volunteered, and in so doing relies upon the members to co-operate and canvass their friends who are non-members, and with this end in view a leaf is attached whereon names can be added.\n\nSubscriptions of any amount will be received by the undersigned and a receipt given, and later a statement of account will be published.\n\nAsking for your co-operation in this cause,\n\nI am, DEAR SIR,\n\nYours faithfully,\n\nL.
