May you live wisely, remembering always our creed, what of many other equally heroic restoration of the playing field ever our standard of learning, exploits performed in China; surely in this year of grace 1950, lads who fearlessly penetrated occupied Hongkong: who lived for months in the hills over-looking Kowloon, where one magnificent gift of $35,000 towards the pavilion by Mr and Mrs Leung Yew. By September next, 80 of our 180 women graduates will be able to live in the new hostel built through the generous gift of one million dollars by Sir Robert Ho Tung.\n\nHe then went on to tell the audience, which crowded this Great Hall, how he got the idea. He said that during his studies, while at the College of Medicine in Hongkong, more than 30 years previously, after his school work and lectures, after his book reading, he used to stroll the streets of Hongkong, it being known to only very few people. About the middle of 1942 we were visited by an officer of the R.A.F, who was planning a secret mission to the Netherland Indies and Malaya. At this stage of the war such missions had hitherto never been attempted in the Far East; they were in every sense of the word penetrating and hazardous unknown. One of the reasons for the visit of this officer was to recruit a dependable companion. He chose Lau Teng-kee, one of our undergraduates.\n\nAttainments\n\nNow what of our attainments in the training of good citizens? In practically every profession, in practically every walk of life, that humility is the essence of wisdom.\n\nLau knew full well the measure of paper which was a scarce and valuable commodity not couched in a completed form. It is therefore fitting that the new School of Engineering and Architecture building, that I shall be opening later this afternoon, should be named after him: thus his memory perpetuated.\n\nAlthough Dr Sloss' departure was a loss, we were very fortunate in securing the services of Dr Ride as his successor. Apart from his capabilities and personality, is the fact that he has been with the University for more than twenty years, and so knows all our aspirations.\n\nIt is very pleasing to have with us to-day, the Chancellor of the University of Malaya, the Right Hon. Malcolm MacDonald. I warmly welcome him. The University of Malaya was inaugurated on October 8, 1949, on which occasion I had the pleasure of sending a message of greeting to the Chancellor.\n\n\"I also express with the united hopes of the Hongkong University, which is the university of this British Colony that is mainly supported by the Colony, but the services it renders far beyond our small confines. It is uniquely situated at the door of China and thus it brings to the people of China the best that British and western culture can offer. Our doors are open to entrants from China, as well as from Hongkong and Malaya. We offer them our facilities freely and we ask for nothing in return. This is in accordance with the vision of our predecessors. If we succeed in carrying out our aim, we will have done something to foster a mutual appreciation between the inheritors of two of the world's most important cultures. (Applause).\n\nThere are two reasons why the University has made good progress. First and foremost, I would put the inspiring leadership given by the last Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sloss. Time and again he wanted to retire but at my urgent request he carried on.\n\nThe second reason, why such good progress has been made, is that the University has many friends not only amongst the alumni, but also amongst the citizenry of Hongkong. E. the Governor said: What a period of tragedy the world has gone through since the last Congregation nine years ago. Although I say this in no sense of self-pity, we in Hongkong were certainly one of the major sufferers. Even to-day in this hall we can see the ruin and devastation of war.\n\nThe University had to be abandoned physically in 1941, its spirit carried on and the light of learning was not extinguished. This was only made possible by the kindness of our friends in China, who took in some of our students, and thus enabled them to continue with their studies.\n\nThe progress at first seemed slow, and as late as 1948, that is only two years ago, I said in an address to the Court that the University was then in the position that it was in 1916.\n\nPerhaps I was unduly pessimistic, for in fact the progress that has been made is quite remarkable. As an instance of this might quote the figures of the number of students. In 1941 there were 572; in 1948 507; in 1949, 620. This number for 1949 represents the complete faculties and Medicine, but still lacks two years of medical students.\n\nOur Medical Faculty this and next year, our undergraduate strength will be at least 800.\n\nThanks To Government\n\nWe acknowledge with grateful thanks the help of the Hongkong Government. This University is already been filled, and it is proposed that Government department; we have no claim for financial help that have no claim for financial help.\n\nMay I in conclusion now say a few words to those who are the youth of to-day's ceremony, our Graduands.
