"content_text": "# THE CHINA MAIL\n\n## HONGKONG, SATURDAY, MAR. 5, 1870\n\nThe **Frederic** the Java Bode of the 8th February, contains the following account of the burning of this coolie ship in Batavia roads :---- \n\nLast Friday there came to the outer roads here, the Belgian ship **Frederic**, 803 tons burden, having on board 379 Chinese coolies, and two women, bound from Hongkong to Callao, A. Nicaise being the captain, and also supercargo. At Hongkong, which the vessel left on the 19th January, unpleasantness had already taken place, and two attempts to set fire to the ship had been made, which were found out in time, and frustrated, with little trouble. According to the statements of the Chinese interpreter, the coolies were continually talking about, and conversing on the subject of arson. The ship passed through Gaspar Straits on its way to Batavia, to take in water and fresh provisions, and afterwards it was intended to continue the voyage direct to Callao.\n\nOn the 6th, the day after her arrival at Batavia, the Captain, who was on shore, on the point of going on board, learned at 4 p.m. that his ship was on fire. Shortly afterwards he found that the ship was wholly in flames, so that it was found to be impossible to get on board. The crew had put the Chinese to the pumps, to endeavour to subdue the flames, while they themselves took the necessary measures consequent on the conflagration; the principal being to get the vessel into shallow water and sink her. This, however, appeared to be impracticable, because, in the first place, there was no wind, and in the second place, because the flames shot forth fiercely in every direction from the deck, so that the sails and rigging were almost instantly in flames.\n\nThereupon leave was given to the Chinese coolies to jump overboard, and endeavour to save themselves as well as they could, for from the rapidity with which the flames spread themselves, and consumed the rigging, &c., there was no possibility of getting out the boats, with the exception of the life boat, and another, both belonging to the Captain, which were attached to the stern, having been thus kept ready for any sudden emergency. All the woodwork obtainable was flung to the swimming Chinese, so that they might avail themselves of it in saving their lives. The crew and 52 Chinese got into the two boats above mentioned, which would not hold more; however, the boats and other craft came hastily on from all sides, and picked up the Chinese, as also did the steam launch of the guard ship, and the steamer **Chilliwung**, in which were the Resident and Assistant Resident of Batavia.\n\nCaptain Nicaise went on board the steam launch, which attached a line to the fore part of the burning ship, so as to endeavour to have her towed into shallow water. Through the low steam power of the launch, this plan miscarried. The **Chilliwung** then took over the line, which was, however, reached and severed by the flames shortly afterwards. As the fire spread itself with amazing swiftness, it became impossible to make fast a fresh line. The cathead of the starboard anchor was also consumed by the flames, whereby the anchor dropped, and thus the vessel lay fast. Consequently she was burned to the water's edge.\n\nFour of the rescued Chinese died immediately, and twelve others are missing, who swam away in the direction of Islands in the roads and have possibly reached them. Of the residue of the cargo (cordage and Chinese articles of trade) nothing has been saved. The crew, also, have not succeeded in saving any of their property. Through the good care of the authorities, the coolies have been lodged in the buildings of the fish market. Their good condition, and outward appearance, giving evidence that they had not been ill-treated on board.\n\nThe fire was first discovered between-decks under the after hatch, on the larboard side, around the rice. The hatches between-decks were grated, and if we take into account what occurred in Hongkong roads, and the conversations on the subject of arson among the coolies during the voyage, and consider their connection with this calamity, it is pretty plain that we may conclude it to be very possible that ill-will may have caused some of the most malevolent of the coolies to throw fire and combustibles among the rice through the gratings of the hatchways.",

"content_text": "# EIGHTH DAY, \n## FRIDAY, 4TH FEBRUARY, 1870. \n### 327\n\nProceedings resumed 9 A.M. Friday 4th February, 1870. **WILLIAM, W. CROWNINSHIELD, sworn, states:** I was Captain's clerk, and on board the Oneida on the 24th January, at the time of her collision with the Bombay. I was asleep in the Captain's cabin, on the starboard transom, at the time of the collision. I found myself lying on the cabin floor, recovering from being stunned. As soon as I realized where I was, I saw that the cabin was a wreck, and the stern was knocked out. I crawled out through the stern, and climbed on to the spar deck. The companion ladder leading from the cabin to the deck was gone, and I climbed over broken timber and débris. I looked down the Captain's hatch, (the skylight was gone) to see if Captain Williams was there; and finding he was not, I went forward on to the bridge, and reported to the navigating officer who was on the bridge the extent of the damage. I went down on deck from the bridge, spoke to two or three of the officers, walked aft, and then found that the ship had commenced to settle at the stern. I went into the main rigging and remained there five minutes. When the water had reached the hatches abaft the mainmast and was pouring down below, I threw off my coats, and presently the ship sank so that the water reached me. I pushed myself away from the rigging and was carried down in the vortex. When I came to the surface again, I found the ship had disappeared, but that there was a boat within 20 feet of me. I swam to the boat, and was taken on board, and landed with the rest of those in Mr. Yates' boat.\n\nTo **Mr. DE LONG**. The starboard quarter was gone the whole length of the cabin, which was 25 feet long, and the stern was demolished, cut down to the water's edge. The poop was carried away. To a person looking from the outside, there would be a clear hole six feet high and ten feet long. There was a large armchair, cane chair, two common chairs, a bureau, a sideboard, and a table in the Captain's cabin. The table had a red cover on it. There was a hanging lamp directly over the table, and also candles. I didn't notice whether the wheel had been carried away or not. I did not notice whether the propeller was revolving. The engines were going, but my impression was, that the propeller and rudder were both gone. The poop cabin had bodily been swept away. I saw Captain Williams after getting on deck. I saw him on the quarter deck, going towards the bridge: and I reported to him, also, the extent of the damage. I heard him give orders, and I think one of them was, to set topgallant sails. The other orders I don't remember. Mr. Muldaur repeated the Captain's orders. He was on the bridge with the Captain conducting the steering of the ship. They were trying to steer the ship with canvas; but afterwards the water reached the main hatches, and he said to the Captain, \"Captain, this ship will sink; it's of no use, you had better take to the rigging,\" and directly after making that remark, he jumped into the main rigging with me. I did not hear his voice about the vessel. I did not hear any hail from either of the ships. Our whistle was blowing from the time I got on deck, until the ship sunk. While I was in the rigging, there were three guns fired. I did not notice who was engaged in firing those guns. I saw Mr. Paymaster Tulloch. I spoke to him on the quarter deck, shortly after I came out of the cabin. After the vessel had sunk, I saw nothing of any of the officers. Mr. Tulloch was merely standing there. I asked him, what was the cause of the wreck, and he told me we had been run into by a steamer. As near as I can judge, the Oneida went down by the stern first; and after arriving at an angle of 45 degrees, she must have pitched down at that angle. I don't know where Captain Williams was at the moment of collision. When I went to sleep, he was in his cabin. Five minutes after I got out of the cabin, the water came in at the stern. The spar deck was put under water by the flow. I should say it was about ten to twelve minutes after I awoke that the vessel sunk. I have been at sea 22 years. I held a commission during the late war, as Volunteer Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.\n\nTo **Mr. BARNARD**. I did feel the ship roll, but I have no idea how many times she rolled before settling down. She rolled slowly. I have no idea to which side she rolled first. I should say the first gun I heard was fired five minutes after I awoke. Between the first and second guns, a minute elapsed—it may have been more. I walked to the bridge. I did not see the Bombay at any time. Captain Williams was on deck when I went to the bridge.\n\nTo **THE COURT**. The light was burning in the cabin when I looked down to see if the Captain was there. There was a messenger boy down in the cabin; no one else. I looked down directly I had got on deck. When I left the cabin, the water was not coming into the cabin itself. The cabin tiller was always shipped at sea. I heard three guns. Two were fired on the starboard side, and I cannot say where the other was fired from. Captain Williams was on deck when the ship left the anchorage. I do not know whether he had been on deck while the officers were at dinner. I do not know when the Captain left the cabin. I didn't see the doctor's boat leave the ship. I was in the starboard main rigging. I did not notice at the time whether the rudder head was gone. I think, before the ship sunk, the doctor's boat was at the davits. I did not see that boat anywhere except at the davits. When I came to the surface, I saw a great many heads. I have been on the Oneida since the 16th of last April. Since that time, I have messed and lived with the Captain. While I was on the rigging, the Kanonsaki light bore almost on our starboard beam; and I should judge that the ship was heading almost for the spit.\n\nI did not notice anyone else in the cabin with me when I awoke from my swoon. I was not carried on deck. Captain Williams had been on shore sick, for two or three weeks before the vessel sailed. I heard no orders given to take to the boats, or cut away spars, to prepare for wreck in any way. I did not notice any spars floating about, when I came to the surface. I was in the water about three minutes, I think. The boat left almost directly I had been hauled into her.\n\n**WILLIAM W. CROWNINSHIELD**.\n\n**SERGE ISTOMIN, Lieutenant of H.I.R.M. ship Vzadnick, sworn, states:** I am a Russian. I am a Lieutenant in the Russian Navy. On the evening of the 24th January last, at about 10 minutes to 7, I was on the deck of the Vzadnick, in this harbour. At about 7 o'clock, I was below, and heard the sound as of a gun, but I am not aware if it was a gun, so that I didn't pay any attention to it. At 10 minutes past 7, I heard distinctly a gun. To this gun, I paid attention, as I thought it was the mail coming. By and by, I heard another gun; but so uncertain was I about the sound, and knowing that these guns may be from any man of war, I did not speak to anyone about it.\n\nTo **Mr. BARNARD**. I cannot swear that those guns were not from Yado. I do not know that I, being in harbour...",

"content_text": "# MUTINY AT SEA.\n\n## Extract from the Daily Themes of 20th March 1874\n\n(From the Cape Argus, Feb. 24.)\n\nThe following is an extract from the official log of the barque Satsuma, which left Cardiff on the 18th December last, bound for the Cape, and arrived here on Saturday:\n\n### No. 1.\n\nAbout 6 a.m. in latitude 31-38 S., longitude 23-38 W., on the morning of the 29th January, 1874, the following mutiny occurred in the South Atlantic:- The barque Satsuma, of 366 tons register, on a voyage from Cardiff to Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope, with a full cargo of coals, was, on the morning of the 29th January, about 8 o'clock a.m., surprised while asleep, by three men, who seized the officer of the watch, lashed him, and put him down into the after-hold. The names of the mutineers are:-\n\n1. James Whyley, aged 27, native of Bedford, Yorkshire, ringleader and instigator of the mutiny.\n2. William Leslie, master (description not given).\n3. Walter Lilly, Ipswich Preston, aged 18 years.\n4. Prospero Beltram, aged ... (description not given).\n5. Robert Melican, aged 21; last ship Singwise.\n \nAbout 6 a.m., the mutiny occurred. I, William Leslie, master, was in my bed when three men seized me. One put a rope with a slip knot over my head, trying to strangle me; another had a hatchet, and the third a revolver, all with murder in their eyes. I sprang from my bed, closed with them, and rushed to the fore-cabin where the mate was. I burst through them, dragging the man after me who had the rope round my neck, but did not reach the mate before my skull was laid open by one or more blows from the hatchets. With the blood all over my face, and head reeling, I rushed through the mutineers and reached the water's edge on deck.\n\nThe mate, who was overpowered by a man, a more powerful man, was found by me, struggling with three of the mutineers, one with a revolver, one with an axe over his head, and one with a rope round the captain's neck. I managed to sever the rope that was round my neck. The mutineers had charge of the ship at this time. The steward, Dunn, was instigator of the mutiny, as he had wasted the ship's stores.\n\nThe statement of Richard Jewill, A.B., coincides with my own, with the exception of the first attack. He first saw the captain standing in front of his cabin, covered with blood, struggling with three of the mutineers.\n\nThe mutineers now looked down the skylight and asked if I was much hurt. On my saying that I was, they said they were sorry for it, that I was such a powerful man, and if I had taken it quietly, I would have been all right.\n\n### Statement of Thomas Richards, Second Mate\n\nIn the morning, while on deck, the steward came behind him and dashed him down, holding a pistol to his forehead, and threatening to blow his brains out if he spoke a word. The other man lashed him, hands and legs. He asked what they were going to do with him, and they replied, if he kept quiet his life would be spared. They then carried him off, and lowered him down into the after-hold, putting hatch on.\n\n### Details of the Mutiny and Escape\n\nThe mutineers took the second boat in size, with mast, sails, one bag of bread, breaker of water, wine, whisky, rum, one hand axe, new log, compass, all the rifles, or else a quantity of nails, tobacco, and other stores. They also took Dun's clothes and part of Simon's. They guised the boat by painting it with black and white paint, and three paint brushes. Before leaving, they spiked the big gun.\n\nThe captain then called out to Dunn, but not seeing him, fired several shots in the dark after him. The mate and one of them went down after him in the hold to try him.\n\nWILLIAM LESLIE, Master, ship Satsuma.\n\nThe cause of the mutiny is attributed to the steward, who persistently wasted the ship's stores. The mutineers were not sailors and were not fit even for ordinary seamen's duty.",

Reserve\n\nre\n\n## Step 1\nThe task requires proofreading OCR output of historical records related to Hong Kong, transforming the text into standard Markdown, correcting spelling errors, fixing spacing issues, rejoining broken sentences, restoring paragraph breaks, indicating missing words, and following specific formatting rules.\n\n## Step 2\nThe given text appears to be a mix of articles, news, and advertisements from a newspaper, likely the South China Morning Post, dated October 23, 1931. The text includes various topics such as legislative council meetings, budget debates, international news, and advertisements.\n\n## Step 3\nTo begin proofreading, we first need to identify and correct obvious OCR errors, such as misrecognized characters, incorrect spacing, and broken words.\n\n## Step 4\nUpon examining the text, numerous OCR errors are evident, including misspellings like \"zivil Hrvata\" which should be corrected to \"civil servants,\" \"éézust ruta\" to \"certain route,\" and \"kačzoaning\" to a more plausible word, possibly \"causing.\"\n\n## Step 5\nThe text also contains formatting issues, such as incorrect paragraph breaks and missing or extra spaces. For example, \"Page 13. „Duging yesterday'ı, Kadynt debati\" should be formatted as a header or title indicating a page break and the start of a new section or article.\n\n## Step 6\nSome sentences are broken across lines or columns without logical reason, and these need to be rejoined. For instance, sentences discussing the budget debate and legislative council decisions are fragmented and require reassembly.\n\n## Step 7\nThe text includes advertisements and news articles that need to be formatted correctly. Advertisements like \"Start-Rite Shoes\" and \"PEBECO TOOTH-PASTE\" should be identified and formatted as such.\n\n## Step 8\nFile references and page numbering need to be formatted according to the rules. For example, \"XCR (85)72\" should be \"XCR(85)72,\" and \"Page XX\" lines should be preserved as they are, indicating page breaks.\n\n## Step 9\nGiven the complexity and the volume of the text, a detailed, line-by-line correction is necessary to ensure accuracy and adherence to the specified formatting rules.\n\n## Step 10\nThe final output should be in HTML format using for paragraphs and \n only when necessary, without including markdown or code fences.\n\nThe final answer is: \n\nPage 13. „During yesterday's, Kadynt debate\n\nCod dem not the proposal, 14 ver the pay of sterling-peld civil servants at certain ruta af sochasDa asi anked fer KE KEPONIE PODKL Awan takım oy an Ammand-maxi, which was Zen, and the Brages ww carried\n\nPage 14\n\nUnofficial members of the Legislative Council\n\nFor the purpose of balancing the budget\n\nBetween the District Officer, Coast and the inhabitants' bone where he met tarday approved, caution fr North of people—savants, buningan | varying tobaccoena duchas, causing the a patamal degree where exte They reduction affects part of | magsales, lawyers, artista, bazzara | duties on light via and imponing a irritation would have been par- the Army and leave saulker per- and above all the economy of the duty on non-intrecasting latach, donable.
