R. Warren of Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co., ninety-one boys of the Diocesan Boys' School and three members of the staff went through the tunnel at Golden Hill.\n\nA launch was taken to Chun Wan, from which place the boys walked about one mile along the road and a second mile up the hill to the power house, which is situated between the two tunnels being made to bring the water from Shing Mun Valley.\n\nThe party was met by Mr. P. R. Warren and Mr. Crossley. About thirty of the senior boys were shown the power house and the machinery, and then went about 1,000 feet into the tunnel leading to the Shing Mun Valley.\n\nOVERLAND CHINA MAIL\n\nNARROW ESCAPE.\n\nJuly 17. Mr. W. Curtis, of the Duro Garage, had a remarkable escape from severe injury yesterday when travelling in a car which was being towed from Taipo after a breakdown. A Chinese driver who was with him was seriously hurt and was conveyed to the Kwong Wah Hospital.\n\nThe accident was due to the tow rope breaking, the impetus carrying the car over the edge of the road down the steep incline onto the foreshore (at the straight stretch of road running parallel to the sea front at Shatin). The car descended with force onto the rocks below, and Mr. Curtis and the driver were thrown out despite the fact that the hood was up.\n\nA breakdown gang which went out later in the day to salvage the car found it impracticable, in view of the difficulty of access, the incoming tide, and the damage sustained, to do other than retrieve certain undamaged parts.\n\nUpon enquiry at the Kwong Wah Hospital this morning, we were informed that the driver was progressing favourably.\n\nThe Hongkong Realty and Trust Company are calling up $2.50 a share on 170,000 shares. On 22nd, Dec., he was wounded and removed to hospital where I visited him. After the surrender the Jap soldiers occupied the garage and started to open the films and throw them about. I succeeded in moving the films, with great danger and difficulty, from the garage to the basement of the house where they were safe for a time.... After the surrender the Japs confiscated all the films in H.K., both foreign and Chinese, and permitted the theatres to show only Japanese and Chinese films...All film companies' offices had to close down and the vaults were sealed. Any person having films in his possession and not reporting them was threatened with martial law. Odell, being in hospital, is unable to do anything and when he recovers will be interned. I, although a British subject, am Russian by birth, and the Japs let me go free because they do not recognise naturalisation. Knowing me for many years, Odell asked me to take over U.A. interests in China for the duration and I decided to save the ten pictures that were hidden by me. By bribing the driver of a Japanese military car, I was able to remove the films from Pokfulum to the Central District where I placed them with a man who was not connected with films before and would not be suspect. Then I made arrangements with the staff of a Japanese boat which is having regular runs between Hong Kong and Kwang Chow Wan...to smuggle the films out. After this, I went myself to Kwang Chow Wan to take delivery of the films when they arrive. They succeeded to bring me one film, South of the Pago Pago, when suddenly the Japs became suspicious and tightened up the control. Now for three consecutive trips the boys have not been able to bring anything and I am trying to get the films out on fishing links. There will be no difficulty in sending films from here to the interior if the local conditions remain unchanged. This place belongs to Vichy French but the Japs have their military representatives here who are keeping an eye on everything, but so far are not tightening up yet.
