        "content_text": "## THE GLOBE. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1870.\n\n**OPINIONS OF MORNING PAPERS**\n\nThe Bombardment of Paris. The Times thinks that \"the fury and rapidity with which the batteries at Mont Avron were overpowered was in no small measure due to the fact that the spot had not yet been armed with the heaviest guns.\" There is, perhaps, closer resemblance between the besiegers' reliance on overwhelming force and the former's pause, though the latter's mode of attack was more steady and deliberate. The besiegers, however, says the writer, were less successful. The French resistance was more stubborn and more pacific than the authors of the bombardment had expected.\n\nSeizing the Opportunity. The Standard remarks that the war has reacted on prices, not in the shape of invading armies or hostile declarations, but on the sale of champagne and other luxury goods. Several standard works of reference have been added.\n\nSPECIAL REPORTS.\n\n10. Special reports have been supplied on Sodium Tungstate, Tea Seed Oil, Refining of Camphor, Wood Oil Standards, Peanut Oil Standards, Corrosion of Iron, Chinese Resin, and the Composition of Chinese Wolfram.\n\nRESEARCH.\n\n11.         "content_text": "# THE CHINA MORNING POST\n## MONDAY, JULY 22, 1929\n\n### ARMS REDUCTION. ON THE SICK LIST.\n\nJapan Leaves Preliminaries to U. S. & Britain.\n\nTokyo July, 19. The Cabinet session to-day was largely devoted to a discussion of limitation of armaments, following Baron Shidehara's report on subject. It is understood authoritatively that the main points of policy agreed upon at this meeting or previously fixed are substantially as follows:\n\n1. Japan is most willing to participate in an Arms Conference seeking a positive reduction, not merely limitation.\n2. Japan is ready to leave the venue and other preliminary details to the Anglo-American discussion.\n3. Japan does not desire to be the host of such Conference.\n4. Japan will support the simplest possible form of the \"yardstick.\"\n\n### Prince George Taking Country Cure.\n\n#### DIGESTIVE TROUBLE.\n\nLondon, July 19. H. R. H. Prince George is indisposed and may have to take a short cure. Interviewed by Reuter, Prince George's Comptroller said the Prince's digestion had been disordered for some few weeks, and dieting was now considered prudent. The Prince has cancelled his public engagements and has temporarily relinquished his duties at the Foreign Office. He is not going to a cure centre, but he will spend as much time as possible in the country. Reuter.\n\nThe Duke of Gloucester, speaking at the Kent Agricultural Show to-day, apologised for the absence of his brother, Prince George, who, he said, was indisposed and may have to undergo a cure which will take a short while.\n\nIt is learned that the Tokyo Government has convinced Baron Matsudaira and Mr. Debuchi that it has been apprised of all Anglo-American disarmament developments and is fully satisfied to allow the early stages of the discussions to continue along present lines. Reuter.\n\nPrince George, who is the King's fourth son, served for some time in the Navy (including service aboard H.M.S. It is understood that the Cabinet has decided that Japan is willing to participate in the Disarmament Conference which will aim at a positive reduction in armaments and not merely limitation. The venue of the Conference is to be left for Anglo-American arrangement and Japan will support the simplest form of \"yardstick.\" Reuter.\n\n### Not Attending Jamboree.\n\nLondon, July 20. Owing to his indisposition Prince George will be unable to attend the World Scout Jamboree which is to be held at Birkenhead on August 3. -Reuter.\n\n### Taking Things Quietly.\n\nLondon, July 20. Prince George who, as announced yesterday by his brother, the Duke of Gloucester, is slightly indisposed, is suffering from digestion trouble. He has cancelled his public engagements and, owing to medical advice, he has temporarily relinquished his duties in the Foreign Office. Although he is to take things quietly and will diet for a time, steps now being taken are merely precautionary and he is expected to resume his normal activities shortly. -British Wireless.\n\n### THE COAL INDUSTRY.\n\n#### The Premier Meeting Both Sides.\n\nLondon, July 19. The conversations of the Government with the miners and coalowners regarding conditions in the coal industry are being continued. The Prime Minister to-day received representatives of the Miners' Federation and has arranged to meet the coalowners again next Tuesday. The contact will continue during the Parliamentary Recess. -British Wireless.\n\n### ABYSSINIA SLAVERY.\n\n#### The Foreign Secretary Receives a Deputation.\n\nLondon, July 19. The Foreign Secretary, Mr. Arthur Henderson, to-day received a deputation from the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society. They suggested that the temporary Slavery Commission should be revived by decision of the next assembly and that when it had been revived, the documents in possession of the British Government concerning slavery in Abyssinia, concerning raids from Abyssinian into British territory, traffic across Red Sea, etc., should be sent by the British Government to the Commission. In his reply, the Foreign Secretary assured the deputation of the personal sympathy of himself and the Prime Minister, and promised, in consultation with the departments concerned, to give favourable consideration to the proposal which they made concerning the revival of the temporary Slavery Commission. --British Wireless.\n\n### ANGORA BLAZE.\n\n#### Thousand Buildings Said to be Destroyed.\n\nConstantinople, July 19. A considerable portion of the town of Angora has been ravaged by fire. The flames, fanned by a strong wind, caused the destruction of over a thousand shops and houses. The number of dead is unknown, but so far six bodies have been found in the debris. Mustapha Kemal is personally directing the operations of the firemen. Reuter.\n\n### AFGHAN OUTRAGE.\n\n#### Amanullah Supporters Strangled.\n\nPashawar, July 19. It is reported that Hidayatullah, a step-brother of ex-King Amanullah, and three other sympathisers of the deposed ruler have been strangled at Kabul. A section of the Afridis has joined the Waziris in support of Nadr Khan. -Reuter.\n\n### WOMAN BANDIT.\n\n#### Robbery with Unloaded Revolver.\n\nTopeka (Kansas), June 28. A young woman armed with a revolver, which is believed to have been unloaded, forced a citizen to drive her to the headquarters of the Security Benefit Association in a busy part of the city, where she intercepted two employees of the association, and Monarchist and Fascist University students, defying the orders of their rector, demonstrating against the Treaty of Versailles. She took from them a satchel containing $14,000 (£2,800). \"Drop that package or I will blow your insides out,\" she declared. She fled on foot into a nearby building, and escaped, discarding her revolver, which was found without cartridges.\n\n### WAR GUILT.\n\n#### Bonfires to Symbolise Readiness for Defence.\n\n#### GERMAN DENIAL.\n\nBerlin, June 29. A chain of bonfires blazed on every hilltop on Germany's eastern and western frontiers to symbolise readiness to guard the Fatherland. This is the culminating event in Germany's protest against Versailles Treaty.
