Grindle\n\nWe discussed the appointment of Attorney\n\nGeneral, Hong Kong.\n\nThe late Governor and less strongly, the\n\npresent Governor in favour of the appointment of\n\nMr. Alabaster a local K. C. on the ground of his\n\nknowledge of the Colony and of Chinese affairs.\n\nWe agreed that such knowledge was not\n\nindispensable for a legal officer.\n\nPersonally however I was in favour of the\n\nappointment of Mr. Alabaster\n\n(a) Because I thought that knowledge of Chinese affairs and customs, though not indispensable, was certainly\n\ndesirable especially in such critical times.\n\nAttorney General no doubt would be called in to assist\n\nin the drafting of such an instrument as the Chinese\n\nCustoms Agreement in which mixed questions of law and\n\nfact are very prominent.
