It was obvious that participants were of rather meagre proficiency and experi- ence.
The items in the programme included solos for piano, violin, pi-pa and cello, a harmonic ensemble, and finally a string quartet! 1 or them all, the Handel Violin Sonata, played by a young school-boy, was perhaps worthy of most favour- able comment, for he has a very sweet tone, and his play- ing seemed have musicianly possibilities which were re- latively absent in the great majority of the performers.

The Chopin Etudes played with considerable under- standing by another young man, who also acted as accom- panist for the performance of the frst movement of the Bee- thoven D major Violin Sonata.
In this he was sadly lacking and this capacity, I'm afraid beautiful sonata, which de- mands a fine degree of partner- ship and understanding between be violin and lann, was perform- the ed in a way which left no after doubt that the real meaning of the Sonata had escaped the pianist, at least.

Unaccompanied Bach is no easy matler-even the hest
this instance one can only say that the performance did not even begin to approximate truc Bach.
About the string quartet effort nothing much can be said: except that faulty intonation all round was a characteristle of the performance, making it at times almost unrecognizable.
It does seem to me that here in Hongkong we should be able lo fleld a better array of student musicians for appearance at a public concert. We all know that proficiency in music, as in any art of discipline is a gradual process, but surely the public ought not to be exposed to the efforts of music students while they are still in embryo.
