Both the Dugong and Manatee live in coastal waters, although Dugong does not escend rivers to the same extent as the Manatee.

The Manatee lives in South America, except one species which inhabits West Africa, while the Dugong lives all round the Indian Ocean from East Africa to North Australia. The Dugong is easily dis- tinguished from the Manates (which has sickle shaped flukes, like a whale) by its paddle-like tail.
