'Girl here wants to know whether her bog-frinud will lose all respect for her if she gives hi what he asks for..... Stupid bitch,
Rending the papers is a Sunday morning ritual with Jimmy Porler, as it is with many others. But with a difference. The papers give Jimmy chance to air hise explosive opinions on religion, wex and politics. He is ' especially bitter about the apathy of the average man... the yob in the front row' and of the woman he married."

'How i lung for a little cuthusiasm. Just ordinary kuman enthusiasm,- that's all. I want to kear a warm thrilling cuire cry out Hallelujah! Hallelujah! I'm alive!
To Jimmy feeling is living. Enthusiasm and the ex- pression of that enthusiasm ls proof of vitality: apathy and indifference a sign of atrophy and death. To Alison, his wife, exhuberance of spirit is bad form: in her world self-restraint as a sign of breeding is taken for grunted. She is thus a natural target for her husband's jiben. Something of a sadist, he tries to provoke her, gead her into a display of emotion. He taunts her with her family, her background, her friends: with the history of their marriage. Anything, anything to cruck her well-bred calm. Finally, quite unwittingly he hits on the one thing that shatters her....

If only something word happen to you, and wake you out of your beauty sleep! If you could have a child and it would die. Let it gruis; let a recognisable human face emerge from that little máss öf índia-rubber and wrinkles, If mily I could watch you face that, I wonder if you might even become a recognizable human being yourself. But I'
doubt it,
But life in the Porter household is hot unrelieved t- savagery. Jimmy is capotile of tenderness and affection. If he makes He hell for all around him it is because he is suffering. The emotional scars of the past are long in healing, and his skin la too thin for the world of the present. He and Alison can escape sometimes into world makebelieve....

Listen darling-you've got to tell him. Either he learns to behave like anyone else, and looks after you or you must get out of this madhouse...this menagerie. He doesn't seem to know what love or anything clae means.
Jimmy is quick to sense Helena's antagonissa and to lash back. He does so characteristically, brutally...

It is quite impossible to catch more than the merest Impression of the tenderness and bitter power of Osborne's play in a few words and pictures. One inust see the action and hear the words. Even reading the play will not do....the words are only faint echoes of the vital Besh and blood of Jimmy Fortor and his world.

Perhaps Jimmy is right. Perhaps I am- what did he call mot An old plant loft over from the Edwardian Wilderness ....'
This is not the inconclusive end to the atory. Alison runs away, but she is yet to learn to feel. With suffering she finds the wisdom Jimmy has been preaching; and in tragedy she teaches him humility.
