New York, Oct. 4. Whitey Ford whitewashed the Cincinnati Reds with a sparkling two-hitter today and Elston Howard and Bill Skowron hit home runs to give the New York Yankees a 2-0 victory in the opening game of the 1961 Baseball World Series before 62,397 fans in the Yankee Stadium.

Ford, who won 25 games for New York during the season and lost only four, was in excellent form as he struck out six and issued only one walk to win his eighth World Series game. It was his third straight Series shutout. He blanked Pittsburgh twice in 1960.
