Out of the shell and on to a conveyor belt-for a short ride to death. A life span of just about ten seconds. These chicks, born at a modern hatchery in Stewarton, Ayr- shire, step out of the shell- split second check and then the ride, which ends in a gas- Olled bin. It is because they are males. The female chicks Hve on, for they are wanted to rear and lay eggs. It is the result of hard economics and scientists taking over in the barnyard. Hens are safentifically bred at the hatchery. They have no breed name, only a number. They are so highly bred for the job of egg production that the males are of little use for faitening as table birds, and no are sentenced to death within seconds of batching out. The conveyor belt spins on with its load of bright-oyed balls of yellow fluff. Ten seconds tick by; the roller turns and the chicks come to the end of the road. The world drops away from them. Death is quick, there is no cruelty, Nor is there any alter- native. The scientists have taken over
