IF YOU LIVED

IN A HUT

ON A HILL?

By

Sylvia da Costa-Roque

QUESTION: What would you do if you were an $80-a-month coolie living in a shantie hut on a hillside in a howling gale? ANSWER: Tie up your hut more securely with whatever pieces of string or rope you can find, put some stones on the tin that forms a roof in the hope that it won't blow away, and stay inside with your fingers tightly crossed.

Your hut may survive to bat- tle with another storm. But the chances are you will end up at the base of the hill surrounded by the remals of your "home" will be blown ...or your but

down around you....or it and you will be completely smashed and buried beneath a noge manu of earth and rock.

If the latter happens, of course, and the resque kurvives don't reach you in time, you will never again have to worry about the best methods of survival during the colony's typhon season-or anythisfe.

Inside One, Frank sald, tu found life going on as if the family were "qulte unaware of their precarious position and that over 30 huts in the area had al- ready been washed away,

The children were pulling plastic flowers together and mok-. ing small toys. The flour WUN ittered with cans catching the rain that dripped from the roof.

"The mother," nald Frank "was terribly con- cerned about my cameras, which were wet, and the produced a piece of cloth to dry them.

All through the area, people were digging to divert streams that threatened their huts. "But no matter what they were doing, almost everybody greeted me, Frank said.

"They really „didn't look very worried, but I suppose 'they had gone through the same routine many times before."
