SOCCER OVERNIGHT

has

This is the season of great expectations. The so-called New Deal

sparked off a blaze of ballyhob. We are told that this is the dawn of a new golden era in English football, that soccer in the sixties will be better than ever before.

It sounds wonderful. My only hope is that people who expect some dramatic change will not be too disappointed. For I cannot accept the cosy view that the abolition of the maximum wage is going to act like a magic wand and transform the face of our soccer overnight.
