Olivier Gendebien of Belgium and Phil Hill of the United States today won the 24-hour Le Mans sports car race, as Italian- built Forraris swept the honours in the gruelling classic. Gendebien and Hill set a new distance record of 4,460 kilo- metres (2,771.89 miles). The old record, set in 1957, by Ron Flockhart and Ivor Bueb of Great Britain, was 4,397.108 kilometres (2,732.80 miles). The average speed of the winners worked out to 185.83 kilometres per hour (115.49 mph).
