but I miss the glitter

THE English do it lavishly with receptions at Lancaster House and a four-star production; the Italians do it resplendently with Venice and gondolas; now the French are trying THEIR hand at putting on a Grand Fashion Week for foreign buyers, starring their off-the-peg fashion houses. And hot from the triumphant British show, I found the differences instructive.

The location was fine. Nobody minds the odd three days in Paris-and buyers have a notorious weakness for the place. Even Paris paralysed by a Metro and bus strike and consequently taxi- starved is a jolly place to be.
