will not play in the Memphis Open

Cleveland, May 23. Arnold Falmer and Gary Flay-

er, the two top monry winner of the year, will not play in the Memples Open nexi month, their attorney said th day.

Mark H. McCormack salt nther Famer nur Player has ever made any sort of com- milment to play in the tourno- em, which condicts with the Canada Cup matches of the Golf Asabelation national in Puerto Rico on June 1-4.

"Neither player has any ob- Higation, eliber morally iekally, to play al Memphis," McCormack added.

The announcement ented several days of speculation regarding whether the golfers would risk a six-month suspen- sion and a $500 que,

McCormack sold neither man faced automatic suspension if he failed to play in the tourna- mint. "Under PGA rules. Alispension is discretionary, and not mandatory as has been Indientes," he said. "Therefore the PGA would not plolate its contractual obligations to the Memphis sponsors by nut stispenslingg the two."

The lawyer emphasised, how- ever, that neither Palmer nor Player bas 48 gret decided whether to pity in iho matches In Sau Junn.” Bui he added that they will inuice their decisions by the end of this week.
