FASHION NEWS
THIS is
the LOOK
LONDON (NOT PARIS) HAD IT FIRST ANYONE who saw the Paris fashion shows this season might assume ---- looking at the dress on the right that it was one of those lightning copies. For this is the 1961 look of long, flat bodice and down- sliding waistline, of short skirt and flaring pleats that all Paris, showed, taken to the 20-ish extreme that Jules Crahay at Nina Ricci designed so gaily and showed along with the complete flapper props.
In fact, it was designed by Mary Quant, of Chelsea, last September and has been such a best-seller in London that she's repeating it for summer in linen.
un-
In the collection she showed then, six months ago, the principal line was focussed around the hips, flar of bodice, fairly waistless, and very short of skirt: startled
that it wos all observers were heard to murmur nervingly reminiscent of the 20's; in the event it simply meant that Chelsea had, once more, got there six months ahead of Paris, and British amateurs of fashion can feel a glow of chauvinistic price.
in
London liked this one: but when Mary showed it New York in her collection before Christmas, buyers who had snopped up her other kooky clothes with cries of de- light and appreciation, turned pale at the sight of it and them, (Which makes soid that it was too extreme for Chelsea one up on New York, too).
