"OUN DUEL IN DURANGO"

A LIVELY FUNERAL

Bagdad, Jan. 1.

Seven persons are on trial in Bagdad's military court in the case of the

'corpse that ran away.

Chief defendant is the corpse himself, a fleet-footed 48-year-old

worker named Kassem Shalhoub.

The

caso began last Moy when police fired a few shota in the air to break up a demons- tration at the Iraq cement com- pany. Investigation showed rubody WIN hurt, but tho leftist workers union claimed Shakhnoub had been killed.

Next day a mournful parade wound from the cement factory into Bagdad, led by chanting workers" and wailing women, thair faces tear-streaked and daubed with mud to show their grief.

The workers carried a wooden coffin bearing the body of Shakhnouby, bobbing aloft as clear evidence of police brutality. Down crowded Raschid street | the marchers gathered sympathy from bazaar merchants, donkey drivers and pedestrians, and the tament grew as they approached the Ministry of Defence.

Coffin left

Thero they planned to profest to the Prime Minister, Major General Abdul Kerim Kassem

At this point, unsympathetic i police moved in to disperse the crowd, a neuffle broke out and the workers scalicred, deserting their martyred comrade. The coffin crashed_ignominiously 10 the ground. Shocked by their irreverence for the dead, the police halted-but not. for long.
