FASHION designers suffer from a morbid fear of women, and so seek to render them harmless by making them look grotesque-or so heard it said. Then I visited Mrs Janey Ironside, Professor of Fashion Design at the Royal College of Art, and Mrs Ironside, far from produc- ing batches of misogynists, is famous for the training of highly talented, enterprising young students whose designs indicate that their interest in fashion is aesthetic rather than Freudian.

THE unremitting struggle against the follies of fashion goes on. In Romford, Essex, the managing director of a large store got so fed up with watching his beautiful flooring being delicate- ly pockmarked by countless stiletto heels that he hunted round and finally had special stiletto-heel- proof composition floorings sent all the way from France; coffee flecked with cream for one floor, deep turquoise flecked with light turquoise for another floor.
"All right, so they say stiletto heels are on the way out. Well It might take a year or 18 months, mightn't it? And 18 months is quite. long enough to wreck my sensitive lino," said the managing director.
