No fears for cricket's future says retiring

Australian

official

Melbourne, Sept. 20.

THE CHINA MAIL, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1960.

There are no fears for the future of cricket in Australia or any- where else, the retiring secretary of the Australian Board of Cricket Control, Mr Jack Ledward, said today.

"Probably for the first time in history, all the oricketing countries are working to a set pattern to resolve the game's problems," he said,

"The last meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference set a pattern which all countries have agreed to follow." Mr Ledward, who is 52, announced last night that he had resigned from the position of Secretary of the Board of Control after being cricket's chief executive officer in Australia since 1968.

He sald today: "Australian cricket has had its ups and downs since I took

over. In 1959 we had just lost the Ashes and the game went right into the doldrums after the 1956 tour of England.

"But now we're back on top again. That's one of the charms of the game, really. Every country has its ups and downs and uncertainties."

Mr Ledward commented on the fact that more and more school cricket was ba- ing played.

He suid: "There are no fears for a game when there are so many eager lads to play it."--China Mail Special.
