JACOBY BRIDGE

HERE is a hand from "Spot-

light on Card Play" that looks almost too easy, but don't let it foot you. The hand is about as tough As I have ever seon and my guter is that not one bridge player in a hundred would make it against the six of hearts lead, plus good defence from then on.

There seems to be nine easy tricks; four in spådes, two in hearts and three in diamonds; in plus a possible extra trick hearts, plus a possible trick in clubs.

The nine tricks are there all right if you go right up with diminy's cee of hearts! cash three spades; and lead a low din- mond to the dummy. West won't be able to keep you. from cashing the ace of spades and three dia- monds.

But suppose you play second hand low on the opening end. East will put up the jack and knock out the king. You will probably go after the spades and

Of course, there is a lot more to the hand. If you do play it wrong East will have to make two discards on spades and he must not throw away one

Teine their way through women of Britain have purled

£30,000,000 worth of wool this year. But by Christmas this figure will have soared.

For, this is the year when the hand-knit has become the high-fashion knit, and when knitting has lost for ever its rocking-chair-in- the-corner nir.

I predict that before the first frosts every woman in the land will be wearing the kind of super-smart kailleds you found only lathe before. But she will most expensive shops have made them at home for herself.

Who is responsible for this increase in the clickety-clack craze which will send many a mut mind before the winter's over?

Undoubtedly, a tremendous stimulus came from the Paris collections when the houtlest skl-lids haute couture houses showed knitted

with eults costing hundreds of pounds, when mink and ocelot jackets grew sleeves of matching ribbed wool, when the comfort of a beaded knitted tunic top cume into its own for evening.

But much of the credit must go to our own knitting wool manufacturers, who over the last few months have really geared themselves to keep up with fashion's fantastic pace.

WARNING

IN every large store today the knitting wool

counters are as much in

the

touch with latest trends as the expensive model fashion departments.

What'a inore, you don't have to be an ex- pert laundress to cope with washing the woollies either. The garment that goes thick and malted after only a couple of 'washings is mercifully a thing of the past. Most knitting wools today are given some shrink resistant Anish.
