loses reprieve

Nairobi, Aug. 18.
Poole, 28-year-old Briton, was hanged here tonight for the murder of an African houseboy.
Poole, the first European to be sentenced to death by an ali- white jury for murdering an Africah, was executed despite last-minute appeals for a re- prieve.
An appeal was made to the Queen and several British mem- bers of Parliament also inter- veried on his behalf.
Poole said farewell earlier today to his wife Gwynneth and his parents, Mr and Mrs Norman Poole. Both women were sobbing as they left the prison and Mr Poole was grimfaced.

When the August Criminal Sessions opened this morning the
Chief Justice, Sir Michael Hogan, was told that no cases had been listed for hearing.
This was believed to be the first time since 1932 that a civil judge had been "out of work."
Mr Dermot Res, Principal Crown Counsel, in accordance with tradition presented the Chief Justice with a pair of white gloves.
Accepting Che gloves, Sir Michael spoke of the decrease in Hongkong's crime rate, com- pared with the increasing num-, ber of crimes in other countries, including the United Kingdom.
