just leaned across his medals to address me. And then my humilia- tion occurred.

One of my heavy clip-on earrings slipped off and plonked down into my soup, disappearing with a splash into the depths of crab bisque.

I brooded uver this mortification for some days. And then I look a decision, a decision 1 had always wanted to make bat had always, in terror, put off.

Several hours later, fortified by a martini I found myself on the front steps of a May- fair House which bore the sign-

CYRIL WILKINSON: EAR PIERCER.

The door was opened by a small man with white hair. He led me up a narrow stairway to a room whose walls were decorated with very bad paintings of women with very pink flesh.

On a table lay some surgical instruments. "Akiveeeeeee..

Clearly

where I'd meant to be.

But the little man spoke soothingly. "It

is only my bird that you heard cry out," he explained. "If often screams like a woman." Apparently noticing that i was still in a state of acute anxiety, he motioned to a wall where there was a piece of paper framed, and on it 1 rad the words:-

"Everyone," said Mr Wilkinson, "is scared of the unknown.

"Nobody's are," said Mr Wilkinson. "The extraordinary thing is that the majority of people have never noticed this. Last week I had a woman with one car an inch lower than the ather, and when I told her, she

SO SMOOTH FOR THAT FIRST. HOLIDAY EVENING

What's your worst-holiday horror? Apart that is, from wandering whether you locked the dear and turned the gas off? -(London Express Service).

The ordinary run of the mill bridge player would have m difficulty about going down at six hearts. He would lose one trick to the acy of spades andī a second trick to West's jack of hearts. He would complain a ttle about his bad luck and possibly some would point out that six clubs would have been a lead pipe cloth.

The particular. South who was declarer happened to be a really great player and after winning the second trick with his king of spades, South led a aud trump to dummy's ace then went into a long huddle. South was sure that East held at least six spades; it was un- likely to find him with a single- tor heart.

Eventually South decided to risk three diamond leads just to see if East would follow to them. EO South played a low diamond from dummy.
