The Hongkong accent
Re Friday's 'Comment' on "Policy on schools": It is rather: premature to be come so eisted with ⋅ the promise of better thingy to come in respect of provi- sion for our educational needs.
It is one thing to build more schools, to encourage the building of more schools, and to subaldies more schools when bulli, and quite another thing to make these schools "serviceable', that is to say, to staff them - with well qualified teach- ers of a high enough call- bre to be able to handle the ever increasingly dif Hcult standard exicted of our primary and secondary students today.
Before the Pacific War many of our well-known and reputable schools would Brilish teachers engage direct from the United Kingdom to handle the upper forms, particularly in subjects requiring a high standard of both well- ten and oral English with the result that pre-war students of these, schools received a good grounding in English and could speak with the proper socent sa taught in schools in Bri- tain.
Today, with,
produced locally trained leachers, whose highest scholastic standard`at best is the local matriculation, but more aften just a mero pass in the School Certi Boate Examination, flood-
·ing most of our prim ary and even secondary schools, our students suffer as a result, as no matter how well grounded in

The result is that in Hong- Kong today, we have what is now know? AR the Hongkong "zoocat'. “which la meliher an' Imiliated form of Oxford accent, nor the nasal twang of the Ameri- van accent but a dal), fist tone without Inflection.
Just as soidler does not make a good fighter with- out suitable, arma, no a school is not necessarily a place of learning without" well - qualised teachers, and the mam- production. of schools klone without well-trained teschert to saft them will avall lifție to our illiterate childred Let us therefore, first, raise the standard of qualifea- tion of our teachers and try to induce more British teachers to come out from Beliain to teach the kin- dergarten and 'primary children so that they might have a perfect · grounding in oral English, for the
child younger the
the quicker he-ly able to satch the tone of his teacher and so can affect the correct accent,
Instead of subsidising build- ing of schools, let Govern- ment subsidise the reman- erations of our teachers,
