·world's critics, is considered the greatest living painter, will be having an exhibition at London's Tate Gallery,

What is the clue to the success of Picasso, who looks like a small, dumpy clown, and whose paint- ings sell fresh from the easel for £5,000 each to those who have the patience to wait for their name, to rise the top of the waiting list?

Perhaps his greatest asset is that he is not merely brilliant he is consistently brilliant

Unlike some great painters who have worn themselves cut after great flashes of creative energy, Picasso has gone on from style to style, from cubism to classicism, from painting to pot- tery and sculpture.

Never once has he faltered, never once has he produced a stale piece of work. His inven- tiveness even now at 78-has never worn out,
